Giolito History
Giolitos creation is owed to the courage, the enthusiasm and the belief in real Italian Gelato by Hans Merki.
PD Dr. Hans Merki, a Bernese specialist in gastroenterology, was introduced to Italian Gelati producer Ghisolfi during one of his numerous travels. After initial obstacles, they agreed for exclusive distribution in Switzerland and international markets. A new brand and new recipes, captivating with the finest ingredients, had to be created.
With the help of Ernst Knam from „L’antica Arte del Dolce“ in Milan and the brothers Ivan und Roberto Ghisolfi, authentic Italian recipes have been tested and combined, until everyone was convinced by the taste and consistency of the Gelati.
After long, unsuccessful considerations, Merki woke up bent over an Italian dictionary. His finger pointed at “giólito”, (old-Italian word for pleasure and joy) and the perfect name for "the Gelati" of exception, was also found.
In spring 2005 „Giolito – l’anima Italiana del gelato“ (the soul of Italian Gelato) presented a new generation of ice cream and since then brings this piece of Italy into your home, in highest quality and with a wide line!
